From Construction Worker to Business Owner: Spha Jiji Builds a Growing Construction Empire

Emalangeni, Umzinto — South Coast: At 36 years old, Sphamandla “Spha” Jiji is an emerging entrepreneur from Emalangeni, Umzinto, who has transformed years of hands-on experience in the construction industry into the foundation of his own business, Isamukelo Construction.

Jiji's journey in construction began in 2011 when he started working for construction contractors. Between 2011 and 2020, he gained extensive experience in various areas of construction, including mixing cement, bricklaying, plumbing, painting, roofing and electrical work.

This experience provided him with a strong foundation and the confidence to take the next step and establish his own business.

In 2026, Jiji officially registered his business with the CIPC, with Isamukelo Construction operating under JiJi Holdings Group. The group is involved in various sectors, including construction, security services and business registration services.

However, Jiji says starting a business was not an easy journey. He explains that capital is essential to starting and growing a company, while one of the biggest challenges has been securing contracts and major projects, as opportunities do not always come quickly.

At present, Isamukelo Construction has three full-time employees, but the company is able to employ additional workers when it secures larger projects that require more manpower.

Jiji's entrepreneurial journey has also taught him valuable lessons about life and business management. He says learning patience, managing finances responsibly and learning from experienced entrepreneurs have played an important role in his personal and business growth.
